There have been a lot of comments and editorials in the last few weeks about the “phonics folks” from some prominent figures in the literacy world. Let’s break it down without any name calling over here. We recommend structured, explicit, strong phonics based approach to reading - just don’t throw the baby out with the bath water?! We also need the best strategies and practices to strengthen vocabulary, comprehension, independent reading, and all of those skills also require a skilled practitioner. So find out…. inspired by Emily Gibbon’s recent blog post how you can help your school gracefully transition to a strong structured literacy program. They have done incredible work making effective research-based literacy activities, and they offer them all for free on their website. The centers include directions for teachers and all the necessary materials. They are mostly print and go activities requiring minimal teacher prep (Yay for that because we are all short on time these days!) There are so many resources on their site that it's tough to find what you're looking for at the time you need it. You can view the collections of resources by type (phonics, fluency, comprehension, etc) and by grade level band. There is also a search tool. Take some time later and see all that they have to offer. In this episode, Shannon and Mary share their favorite FCRR reading center activities. I loved all of the advice about Shared Reading, but let's dive into Shared Writing as a part of our Balanced Literacy series. Shared Writing, similar to shared reading involves explicitly modeling and sharing writing behaviors to demonstrate and collaborate within a small group of students who are working on a targeted writing skills. The students are collaborating with the teacher and other students with the group to write a collective writing product that has been explicitly modeled. Shannon and Mary discuss the techniques for explicitly modeling writing strategies within a small group to collaboratively write as a group. "Episode 14: Balanced Literacy Shared Writing -whole group, small group, writing conferences Biggest difference between shared and guided is who is holding the pen. -Shared writing= teacher has the pen/pencil -Help students rehearse what they want to write. Students help teacher transfer thoughts to paper. Children are giving input about the writing, making suggestions, sharing observations. -Teacher is the scribe. Offers group support and strong models. -daily news. Teacher writes with student support. -Morning Message -I used the ELMO display anonymous writing---we did shared revising & editing of writing pieces. -Reread all writing to make sure it's correct. -Display the writing pieces for reading time! As students reread the writing, they internalize correct English syntax & sentence & language flow. -Be sure students participate! Otherwise, it's modeled writing. -Don't get caught up in conventions. -There's a lot of shame in writing. Be gentle with students. It's often student's weakest subject and one they don't feel comfortable with. -it's helpful to understand writing development stages-resources in show notes."
